Via: Richard Carey - Digital Media Solutions, Serious Games & Learning Smiluations

As anticipated on my prior posts focused on Serious Games Market Size, funding has started to become available from foundations, governmental agencies, non-profits and venture capitalists.

Wired, Too, Bearish on Second Life

Last fall, Wired published a huge "travel guide" on Second Life. "[...] This exotic realm can seem bewildering and strange to first-time visitors," the magazine wrote then.

It Is Hard To Think Of Anything More Surreal Than A Chinese Goldfarmer

by: Lynette Webb

858255125_51d5418d79_400There was a really interesting article in the New York Times recently that looked at the gold-farming phenomenon. For those who don’t know, ‘gold farming’ is the term given to people who play online games like world of warcraft in a manner so as to earn the maximum ‘gold’ which is then sold on to other players who don’t have the time/skills to earn it themselves.

Links

Hi and welcome to another installment of "articles you may have missed and you may or may not care about".

First off, The Angry Gamer, an introductory analysis of..well.. trash talking. While not necessarily revealing anything you didn't already know, the author did do his homework and took the subject quite seriously.

Virtual Goods Summit 2007 Roundup

Virtual World News has done an excellent job posting a record of the Virtual Goods Summit I mentioned earlier (reLink), and there’s plenty of documentation elsewhere. I’ve not read everything yet but wanted to at least make those people who stop in here - especially Industrial Designers - aware of the interesting and relevant topics being discussed.

Adsense Edges Towards Virtual Worlds

Via Mashable (Link) comes word of the entirely expected: Google is bringing AdSense - and then some - to Google Maps. The way they’re doing this, however, is interesting. It’s more than just text they’re offering. Mapplets, as they’re called, will likely carry much more since this feature allows developers to build their own applications within Google Maps.

Starwood Shutters SL ALoft Effort {*Update*}

The first time I blogged about Starwood’s CEO, Steven J. Heyer, it wasn’t because of their use of virtual world Second Life, it was because of a video interview where Heyer talked extensively about consumer Experience. I titled that entry using a key quote from the interview, “We Deliver Memories” (reLink).

Playboy Soon in Second Life

Playboy Island in Second Life is opening soon. Look for Playboy in group search, join, and you too can be a playmate (that's the title group members get automatically). I bumped today into someone who said the island was actually open, but when I tried, the teleport failed. Don't you love the island's shape, though? It's one of the few businesses for whom Second Life is a natural fit, given how many of the residents spend most of their time.

Visa Launches World of Warcraft Card

A year ago, Phillip Torrone wrote in MAKE: "Very soon, credit card companies and game makers will reward their customers who spend money in the real world using private label "rewards" credit cards. They will use gifts of virtual currency such as Blizzard's World of Warcraft gold and Second Life's Linden dollars."

Endemol Takes Its Shows To 3D

Apparently inspired by the successes of MTV's Virtual Laguna Beach and its own Big Brother show set in Second Life, Endemol is teaming up with EA to build Virtual Me (virtualme.com redirects to EA press room), a virtual world that will allow "avatars to compete in online versions of Deal or No Deal, Fame Academy and Big Brother." eMarketer: Video Games Are Getting Down To Business

eMarketer.com reports:

"In-game advertising will evolve in scope and sophistication, offering new platforms for marketers, new business opportunities for technology providers and vital revenue for game developers, who have struggled with the escalating production costs of increasingly complex games," says eMarketer Senior Analyst Paul Verna, the author of the new Video Game Advertising: Getting to the Next Level report. "eMarketer estimates that over the next five years video game advertising will grow at a compound annual growth rate of nearly 23%, reaching nearly $2 billion by 2011."

Conference Notes From Virtual Worlds 2007

by: Karl Long

An old friend and colleague just sent me these notes he had written up for the Virtual Worlds 2007 conference that just took place in NY.

main point being there is a lot of stuff happening out there and SecondLife is just one player.

DEFINING QUOTES:
“We are at the silent movie stage.”
“This is one freaky, geeky 21st century we are moving into.”
“A lot of this is going to happen and a lot of it is not going to happen.”

Virtual Earth As Gaming, IM Platform

CNet reporting on ETech: "Microsoft executives are also holding regular discussions on where to take Virtual Earth in the realms of entertainment, gaming and commerce, according to Curlander. For example, Microsoft might open up the software so developers can create games for the Xbox 360 out of Virtual Earth.

List of Brands in Second Life

nspired by KZero's map of brand presence in Second Life, I thought about compiling a more usable list with SL URLs and everything, but then I found a fairly complete one over at SL Business Communicators wiki. Instead, I flew around the world and took a few snapshots of islands I hadn't seen before.

9dragons, Part I: 5wastedhours

Some time ago, this blog (among many others), announced Acclaim's intentions of producing MMOs that'll be free of charge and supported by ads. While my heart didn't exactly start racing and I Wasn'  imagining myself a future of nectar and ambrosia, where one can find a host of great MMOs to get addicted to for free, just at the cost of having to see an ad or two, I did make some notes about it.

Data Mining

As those of you who read The Escapist know by now, they ran an article on Data Mining and advergaming targetting children (with the prominent example being Neopets). It raises all sorts of good points, such as IP debates hardly touching the field and shifty disclaimers (that no one reads anyway, as we all know). Read it here.

Hrmm?

Advergaming. A concept that, even without overworking the imagination, can work for mostly anything. Burgers? Advergame! Cars? Sure! Beer? Naturally. This considered, I always approached Advergaming cautiously, careful which path I took through the jungle. Because you never know when something like this might spring up in your face. Yes, it's only natural that magazines would use the resource and it's not exactly a new thing. But somehow, there's something rather disturbing about the thought that, after reading a Teen magazine, someone would also hit its website and play the games there. Why? Back in my day...

Eh..if you do read such magazines and actually try any of their games, email me?

Søme SL News Here

And I'm back, if only fleetingly, due to some first life issues (I knew I shouldn't have gotten a First Life). At any rate, here's a bit of news straight off the Beeb: Sweden will open an embassy in Second Life (link).

Also, We The Sheeple has an article on AOL beta-testing their SL island.

Reverse Product Placement in Games

BrandWeek has a follow-up on David Edery's HRB piece on reverse product placement in games (see David's earlier post on the topic, my old post on the fictional brand Sprunk in Grand Theft Auto, and a summary of the HBR article in Gamasutra). What's reverse product placement (I call it "proxy branding") ? BrandWeek writes: "While traditional product placement refers to integrating a real brand into a fictional environment, an idea that's gaining traction is to create a fictional brand in a fictional environment and then release it into the real world."

Rumor: Google Planning Virtual World

For the record: Blogs today are widely broadcasting a rumor "from an academic who heard through the PhD grapevine" and passed on by a VC that Google is putting together pieces to create a SL-like virtual world based on Google Earth. You've heard it all back in May. It makes more sense now that another rumor has it that Google is shopping for a ad-to-games serving company. ZDNet blog warns, "I'd be careful not to pay too much attention to a rumor put out by a partner in the VC firm that owns a substantial stake in Second Life — any news of Google creating its own virtual world is sure to drive up acquisition interest in Second Life from the search giant's competitors."

Gamevertising News

As you might have figured out, my "In The News" posts are anything but a grand collection of fresh and useful information which might interest a larger audience. These news are highly personalized (ie: I only post stuff that I find interesting) and sometimes I just can't be bothered to link to stuff 500 big gaming websites already reported. For today though, I'll try my hand at a more coherent summary and attempt to build a short list of gamevertising information.

BBC Launching A Virtual World For Kids

CBBC, the channel for 7-12 year olds, said it would allow digitally literate children the access to characters and resources they had come to expect.
Those building CBBC World said the emphasis would be on safety and responsibility, with no chatrooms or facilities for building new parts of the virtual world.
