MTV is launching a new play-while-you watch game that allows viewers of The Hills to accumulate points by tagging comments on the reality TV show, reports CNET.
Entitled Backchannel, the game provides viewers with numerous one-liners or comments from other players. Users then tag on the ones they like to accumulate points, receiving credit for voting on their own comments as and those that become especially popular.
The company describes the new game as "competitive chat", which CNET compares to competitive Twittering.
MTV says Backchannel was inspired by the success of its Rock Band game, which allows users to form virtual groups using music from a variety of licensed partners.
However, bloggers say Backchannel could also have implications for MTV's social networking moves, as the game is compatible with social platform Flux, created by MTV parent company Viacom.
