by: Reinout te Brake

The NPD group, the leading market research company, has recently carried out a study, in which it discovered some interesting findings about the gamer population. It defines seven gaming profiles, defined by ownership, usage and frequency.

Gamers2 - RtB.jpgOf the 174 million gamers who play games on PC/Mac or video game systems, 3 percent are Extreme Gamers, 9 percent are Avid PC Gamers, 17 percent are Console Gamers, 14 percent Online PC Gamers, 15 percent are Offline PC Gamers, 22 percent are Young Heavy Gamers and 20 percent are Secondary Gamers.

The extreme gamers spend an average of 45 hours a week playing videogames and are more likely to play games on consoles than on the PC. And even though they are one the most involved segments, they represent a small share of the market.

The report contains more info that helps to better understand all gaming segments, as well as the behavior and trends in the videogame industry.
