Advergame Arcades

The same people who brought us interactive movie theater entertainment have installed several advergaming arcades in the MSNBC.com digital cafe at Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan. The two games are NewsBlaster and NewsBreaker. The arcades are free and hooked up to the web. Love the old-school look and the homage, perhaps unintended, to Tapper, the first arcade to feature a brand (more in this post on history of in-game advertising).

Talk: The Sex, the Violence and the Dirty Money: The Truth about Social Virtual Worlds

by: Gary Hayes

The slides below are from a presentation I did last week at the Monash Law Chambers as part of a four speaker mix on Law and Regulation of Virtual Worlds. The embed below has just been elevated as a slideshare featured presentation - so goes to show what a catchy title will do. I co-presented with Dan Hunter, New York Law School, Melbourne University Law, Melissa deZwart, Senior Lecturer, Monash Law and David Lindsay, Senior Lecturer, Monash Law.

Identity Management for Virtual Worlds through Windows Live ID?

by: Rick van der Wal

microsoft_live.jpg

While interoperability of virtual worlds, social networks and the 2D web in general continues to improve, the confusion and clutter surrounding these various worlds with different identities increases. Many virtual worlds and networks still have their own unique features behind mandatory sign up processes, each world requiring a new identity (avatar).

Chevy Cobalt Labs - the GM Advergame

chevy2.jpg

Chevy Cobalt Labs from General Motors looks pretty cool and strikes me as rather well executed. The experience takes you from modding your very own virtual Chevy Cobalt to racing it against other players. If that's your thing, then all the better but otherwise, there are still a few things that GM did well with this game so read on.

Serious Games Become Tangible With area/code Big Games

Enhancing large-scale, real-world games

With games like Sharkrunners that cross media and create an artful mix of real and virtual worlds, area/code delights in challenging gamers' expectations
Big Games are large-scale, real-world games. A Big Game might involve transforming an entire city into the world's largest board game, or hundreds of players scouring the streets looking for invisible treasure, or a TV show reaching out to interact with real-time audiences nationwide.

Lively Anything but Lively

by: Rick van der Wal

google_lively_not_so_lively.jpg

Take two on Googles virtual world Lively. I had to try again at home, hoping this time the customization functions would not fail me. Using Vista and Firefox 3 I expected even more problems but apart from having the installer crash once this time I did get to experience the full ‘Livelyness’ of the application.

Google Lively: First Impressions

Big news today, if you haven't heard already: Google released a 3D chat app called Lively. It's the same thing that was being tested at a university in Arizona last winter, and probably the same thing that was rumored about in January 2007 and anticipated as early as 2006.

Tips for Corporate Builds in Second Life

Chris from One-to-One Interactive writes in with a new report that compares corporate professionally-done (and often committee-approved) builds in Second Life with player-made stuff. Even if you think Second Life is sooo 2007 but are interested in interaction design in general, take a look. Among other findings, there's this gem about how the biggest sim is not always the most popular, and for the reasons that are familiar to architects and urban planners but not necessarily to software designers [emphasis mine]:

Video: All the World's a Game

This is a video of a Supernova 2008 panel featuring Doug Thomas (USC), Raph Koster and Dave Elfving (Apple). It's a good panel themed around the idea that "Massively multiplayer online games offer glimpses of how social interactions and work will develop in the Network Age. What can they teach us? How can businesses and online communities leverage insights from virtual worlds to develop more effective systems and practices?" If you don't have the time to watch the video (apple quicktime required, no pun intended of course), you can find a summary on the Uptake blog. Embedded version coming when I can find it.

CNET on Monetizing Games

Good article today on CNET called "29 potential video game monetization methods". Of course, there's nothing here amazingly new and never heard before but if you're the type who likes lists, this is as good as they come. As it happens, some of these models are older whereas some are just picking up speed.

Proving the Potential of Virtual Worlds

by: Matt Rhodes

I often get asked to explain why SecondLife (SL) is more than just a geek and sex fest. Millions of people have visited this virtual world only to give up and abandon their avatar on day one (over 10 million according to Wikipedia). I don’t blame them. SecondLife isn’t ready for the mainstream. And nor is it SecondLife per-se that’s important.
