Virtual Earth As Gaming, IM Platform

CNet reporting on ETech: "Microsoft executives are also holding regular discussions on where to take Virtual Earth in the realms of entertainment, gaming and commerce, according to Curlander. For example, Microsoft might open up the software so developers can create games for the Xbox 360 out of Virtual Earth.

Google Files Patent for Targeting In-Game Ads

US Patent Application 20070072676: "Information about a person's interests and gaming behavior may be determined by monitoring their online gaming activities (and perhaps making inferences from such activities). Such information may be used to improve ad targeting. For example, such information may used to target ads to be rendered in a video game being played by the person."

Visa in "The Game of Life"



USA Today: "This summer, "plastic" will replace cash in the new edition of the nation's second-most-popular board game. Last year, in Europe, Visa replaced money in a Monopoly game." It's the upcoming "The Game of Life: Twists and Turns" by Hasbro's Milton Bradley.

Ad Pubs Bearish on Second Life

It's mostly a follow-up with the author of the Komjuniti study about second lifers not being all happy with how RL brands present themselves.

9dragons, Part I: 5wastedhours

Some time ago, this blog (among many others), announced Acclaim's intentions of producing MMOs that'll be free of charge and supported by ads. While my heart didn't exactly start racing and I Wasn'  imagining myself a future of nectar and ambrosia, where one can find a host of great MMOs to get addicted to for free, just at the cost of having to see an ad or two, I did make some notes about it.

The Biased Frontier

Earlier this week I read that NASA was getting into the MMOG scene (Link - PDF for internal call for proposals). Far from coming as a surprise, I find it odd that they’ve not already developed a space-based property. How many people have ever played simple “Lander” videogames where you have limited fuel and have to settle your little 2D vectorized, spindly-legged spaceship on harsh “moon” terrain? Many, I’m sure. It’s an old game. And it always seemed to me that NASA was a natural for this stuff.

Kaneva: First Impressions

 

A new social 3D space Kaneva is launching soon, but apparently they just opened their doors for a public beta and guess who has sneaked (snuk?) in. In a nutshell, it's a rather good-looking MySpace-like social networking site in 3D that lets its users to customize rooms with stuff (photos, video and music). With its limited functionality, it's no Second Life killer, and it also suffers from some, in my opinion, unfortunate interface decisions, although the MySpace crowd probably won't care.

Gaming to save the world...

Several initiatives to do some real world good by using the virtual world of gaming struck my eye today.

One Big Game is a non-profit that wants to raise funds for children's charities by involving the gaming industry. Their slogan is 'Play, so others can'. Although early stage, they show an impressive advisory board, and I'm optimistic this initiative will succeed.

MS Techfest: Surface Computing Demo

There’s a neat video from Microsoft’s Techfest (Link) demonstrating some transreality technology that’s worth a peek. There are two parts to the video. The first is called “surface computing” and that basically deals with making commonplace surfaces “live”. The demo for one example of this shows a regular table top with some construction paper formed shapes sitting beneath an infra-red camera setup which is used to derive a heightmap. This information is then ported into a racing videogame where digital cars drive over representations of the shapes. The computer cars are themselves then projected onto the tabletop as they move. Everything is “live”, so if someone sticks their hand into the scene and moves the paper around, the videogame environment is modified in real time as well.

Oh, WoW...

We all know World of Warcraft, right? It's all over the internet so chances are, even if you never played a MMO in your life, you still heard about it. It's that game that gets people hooked faster than you can blink. Of course, as with any big thing, it has its detractors, still, the game has alot to offer to alot of different categories. Yes, the quests are dull and repetitive, yes, roleplaying (in the purist meaning of the word) is all but rubbish for the most part, yet somehow, the game's mix has the certain je ne sais quoi that fascinates. Mind you, I only say 'je ne sais quoi' as a figure of speech, the game has been debated and analyzed in more articles than you'd ever want to read. Eitherway, Warcraft's not the only thing I want to talk about, but I'll just use it at a start point for a few musings on MMOs and such. And if that doesn't appeal to you, there's screenshots!

Sony’s “Home”. Sony’s Imagination. (*Update*}

Sony has been getting its head handed to them the last year or so. From rootkits to management shake-ups, it seems every story with “Sony” in the title is bad news. They desperately need something good to happen, especially with PlayStation 3’s unimpressive sales figures. Fortunately, the latest news out of Sony isn’t bad. Marine Design and Simulation


The above video is from the forthcoming videogame “Ship Simulator 2007″. It looks to me more like an excellent opportunity to throw some yacht designs into a beautiful simulation. And if developer VSTEP provides an SDK, I’ll probably do just that once the game is released.

When Player Data Mining Becomes a Social Sinkhole

There’s an excellent article on the Escapist titled “Mining the Game” (Link) which is very much worth taking the time to read. The article, written by Sara Grimes, discusses the kinds of data collection processes I once outlined in one of my more popular entries (reLink). The key difference is that while I’m elaborating on the business of this technology, she’s discussing the topic in the context of children’s online games. I’d recommend reading both to perhaps gain a broader perspective of the potentials and potential pitfalls.
